MythicMay Creatures 1

First batch of drawings from the MythicMay challenge by Audre Schutte that I'm participating. I'm going for a more naturalistic look in my interpretations, trying to think of what kind of creature could inspire the myths and folktales that are told of them.

Hippogriff. Based the coloration of this one on black-and-chestnut eagle and gave it powers of fire.

I decided to take a less traditional approach with this Quetzalcoatl. I thought of a creature that could inspire such myths and ended up with this cross of an archaeopteryx and Knysna turaco.

Yelbeghen
This Siberian myth is described as a dragon/serpent with several heads or an ogre with multiple faces riding an ox, so naturally my approach is a musk ox inspired dragon-creature. I'm gonna have so much fun with these myths!

Originating from the Philippines, Tikbalang is described as a humanoid with a horse head and long limbs ending in horse hooves. They are said to be protectors of the forest. The description reminded me of Chalicotherium so I based mine on that.

Shug Monkey. In the folklore of Cambridgeshire this creature is said to haunt Slough Hill Lane. It's described to have the body of a shaggy black sheep dog and the head of a monkey with huge shiny eyes. I couldn't help but to think of an aye-aye.
